Handy Weights
If you're looking for some lightweight fixed dumbbells these should work just fine. The neoprene handles make them comfortable to grip- as opposed to those that are bare metal (some of those metal ones with "hatch marks" on the grip are downright painful). Also these dumbbells won't be falling apart anytime soon. The worst that will happen to them over the long run is that the covering will start to wear down- however you'll still be able to use them for your exercises despite that. In other words a pair of these are going to last you awhile. One tip though when they do start to wear down most of the time its on an edge. Therefore always placing them on a soft a surface as possible will be easier on the neoprene and make the covering last longer. Metal dumbbell racks can take their toll that way.
The only downside to buying dumbbells such as these is that the weight is set. In other words for any given exercise you'll only be able to get "5 pounds strong". For example if you can lift a 5-pound dumbbell 10 times and you continue to lift it 10 times week after week you'll never get any stronger. That's because the human body is efficient and your muscles say "If I can already lift 5-pounds and that's all they ever want me to lift then I don't have any reason to get bigger or stronger so I'm going to stay just the way I am."
Therefore if you can use a 5-pound dumbbell quite easily with your exercises and you want to get stronger you're going to have to add a pound or two. And then you're going to have to go out and buy another dumbbell say a 6 or 7 pound one in order to progress and get stronger. And that was my point- fixed dumbbells are set so a disadvantage is that if you want to continue to get stronger you'll have to go out and buy more dumbbells. Tip: if you think you're going to need more weight in the furture look into buying a pair of ADJUSTABLE dumbbells instead. Just a thought.
All-in-all a good product and I highly recommend them if you're in the market for a pair of fixed dumbbells especially good if you're doing rehab exercises like for your rotator cuff. People with tendonitis might also be interested in Treat Your Own Tennis Elbow.

BEST DUMBELLS EVER!!!!
I was torn between these and the PowerBlock dumbells I kept reading about. I had a chance to check out the 2008 and prior model Bowflex Select Tech's at Dicks Sporting Goods and I remember thinking about how easy it was to spin the dials to adjust the weights.
My only concern and hesitation was that a few reveiws mentioned the possibility of the weights rattling and people were worried they could fall off? I had not heard this before so I researched it more and although the PowerBlock dumbells had gotten good reviews I simply could not get past how ugly they were and the fact that they used a magnetic pin to hold the weights in.
I decided to spend the few extra dollars on these 2009 model Select Techs (assuming any prior issues they may have had were corrected) and boy am I glad I did they are AWESOME! The dials in my opinion are ten times easier than the magnetic pins of PowerBlocks and these Bowflex dumbells look ten times more fashionable (our gym equipment is on our loft so yes my wife and I have a style standard). These dumbells are about 15 inches long but neither of us have any issues with their size (I think the PowerBlocks were only a 3 inch difference anyways).
We are 100% happier we bought these and we bought the stand from Amazon to go with them also (it is better for your back if you lift dumbells from a standing position instead of from a squatting one). I hope you enjoy your SelectTechs as much as we enjoy ours!

Nothing better for 10 times the price
Vitamin E is fantastic for your skin and Colonial Dames delivers. This product is 25% vitamin E so in a 4oz jar you get 1 pure ounce of E. My mother has used it for years and looks like she is years younger than she realy is. She and my sister swear it's this cream. Now my wife is using it and wont use anything else. Before she started 2 years ago all she would use is La Prarie. Now she is using this E cream and I'm saving a fotune. two big thumbs up.

Not worth the price
I received the dumbbells yesterday. FedEx must have dropped the box over and over again as the cardboard exterior and foam interior were literally in pieces. The slide on one of the dumbbells was broken. However this review is about the dumbbells so here goes....
The slide components are plastic and this plastic seems like it will wear down quickly and fail over time. One of the slides (the adjustment that changes the weight) was broken and this damage seems to be more the result of a poor design and poor materials rather than the disrespectful horror of FedEx delivery. The other dumbbell is fully functional so I studied its mechanism and found that it did not move smoothly at all times. It is a hard truth that when lifting these dumbbells overhead my safety is in the hands of a plastic sliding clip.
Dumbbells are made to be handled. Even with the idiocy of FedEx the dumbbells should have been fully functional. When working out be prepared to treat them as if they were made of glass.
I would not recommend these dumbbells to anyone that is serious about using them.

SUPREMELY VERSATILE...JUST ONE COMMENT THOUGH.
I am a very healthy and reasonably fit 50-year woman. I play tennis and swim 50-100 lengths daily. I bought the weights to gradually improve my upper arm strength. They are fantastically versatile the only comment I would have is that I think the weights should start from 5lbs not 10lbs.
Two of my friends used the weights and found the lowest weights too heavy to start training. My sons use them and can do much heavier weights.
We all gave them a score of 5 out of 5.

Ironmaster vs Bowflex Ultimate
Got 1000 bucks to spend on a home gym? What might you want to buy? That was my dilemma when I got an overseas assignment in a remote area and knew I wouldn't see a decent gym for months on end. So I bought two alternatives--an Ironmaster weights bench and accessories and a Bowflex Ultimate.
After a year's use I have a clear favorite--the Ironmaster. Now the Bowflex claims that you can do some 100+ gym-quality exercises with it. You can do 100+ exercises but they are far from gym quality. Hey you can do 100+ exercises with two bags of rocks and a little creativity. The Bowflex took a LONG time to put together and frankly all of those exercises aren't so great. I max out the Bowflex on some exercises and I'm no gym dude--just a 50-yr old in respectable shape. And the Bowflex has variable resistance with those bows meaning you aren't getting resistance where you need it on a lot of exercises. Finally you don't need 100+ exercises. The fact is when you come right down to it there are probably about 15 exercises that will take care of your whole body.
Now the Ironmaster. First the free weights. I've used other adjustable free-weights and none are as secure or as fast to change out as the Ironmaster. And you can step it up 2-1/2 lbs at a go--not so necessary for me but great for my wife. One fast change-out trick when stepping up the weights--rather than adding equally on both sides just add an additional weight to ONE side of the dumbbell. This takes half the time. By shifting your hand slightly off-center on the crossbar it will still feel balanced.
The bench--superb quality. Quickly adjusts to various inclines from perpendicular to flat and plenty in between. Necessary accessories for a full range of exercises--definitely the leg extension curl and crunch sit-up attachments. Both are durable and comfortable and let you focus on your workout. I also got the curl bar and the preacher curl pad--all for under $1000 (you might find some specials if you go to the Ironmaster website).
Nothing puts on muscle faster than free weights true. But this is not just for putting on the meat. If I'm not feeling like a full workout I'll just go through a few reps to flex the muscles even in front of the TV. It's a lot better than couch-potato-ing it and leaves me refreshed. There are also a lot of exercises you can do without the Ironmaster--lunges squats all kinds of stretches toe raises (with or without weights)--to supplement the Ironmaster so that your body gets a thorough workout without a houseful of equipment.
Conclusion: gives a great essential workout saves time and money when compared to going to the gym and a lot more convenient. Going to last a long long time. For your money this might be unbeatable.

My Opinion.
Potential buyers should be aware that these dumbbells only adjust in 10 pound increments had I known that I would have dropped some extra bills on the Bowflex selecttech. For that reasons and the fact that I could not find that information anywhere I give it 2 stars 10 pounds increments is a lot!

Consumer Alert! HORRIBLE product!
The Lifecore Corebells promised to be durable (as the plates are made of metal) and to be adjustable in 2.5 lb increments. HOWEVER both promises are false. These dumbbells are made of a brittle plastic casing that is too fragile to hold the metal plates. After approximately 10 uses the plastic sliding mechanism used to select the weight plates began to stick and grind. Little pieces of OILY black brittle plastic began to litter the floor and before I knew it the weight plates began falling out of the dumbbell handle.
Additionally I am extremely disappointed in Lifecore's false advertising that these weights adjust in 2.5 pound increments. They do NOT. Instead they adjust in 5 pound increments and the only way that you can adjust by 2.5 pound increments is to unevenly load each end of the dumbbell. For example if you want 22.5 lbs you will need to set one end to load no weights while the other end loads 20 pounds. Have you ever tried to perform chest presses or shoulder presses with an unevenly loaded dumbbell? It's just not safe! Get Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells instead!

Great dumbells great prices and fast shipping
This is a very high quality set of dumbells; each much better built (not to mention way nicer looking) than the standard cast iron dumbell. They don't chip or make a loud noise when struck together. A couple very minor things to note is that they have a black greasy coating on the rubber that should be wipped off well before use (unless you don't mind black marks on anything they touch). Also the do have a slight rubber smell - not overpowering but noticeable when entering the room. After a few weeks it is still present. I've noticed the same smell in gyms and never heard anyone complain. All in all I am very satisfied with this dumbell set.

Some cautions and considerations
I agree that these are the best adjustable dumbbells on the market. However I would add a few caveats. For starters it is important to have the PowerBlocks on a level surface and make sure you insert the pin straight across rather than at an angle. If you don't it is possible that a plate could fall and hit you even with the elastic backup mechanism. It is also very important to put the pin assembly together right side up. If you don't the magnets that hold this assembly in place don't engage.
On exercises like OVERHEAD triceps extensions the points above are particularly important. While I think this product is great it does limit range of motion in some exercises such as upright rows. The dumbbell is rather long and this could be a problem depending upon your frame. However I wouldn't worry about the square design. I find using these dumbbells to be quite comfortable and the padded grips certainly help.
While this product is quite expensive it's also the best out there that I know of and I shopped around carefully. It also seems to be the safest and is certainly more convenient takes up less room and even costs less than a set of full dumbbells that can cover the same weight ranges.
If money is an issue for you you may want to consider getting the model of dumbbells one tier down from these that adjust in 5 lb. increments and then purchasing adjustable wrist weights in 0.5 increments. This will give you about the same effect for less cost.

Performance Fitness Systems TB560 Adjustable Dumbbells
Overall I am happy with the product. My only issue is sometimes it is not easy putting the dumbbells back on the stand. They get caught up in the weights that were left on the stand. The slots should be a little deeper to prevent the weights from flopping around when the dumbbells are removed. Other then that they work good and I recommend this product for anyone in the market.

Ironmaster Vs. Powerblock from someone who owns BOTH
After years of collecting the old standard hex dumbells and trying to maintain a home gym in the city in various apartments (usually in the common basement) I found the PowerBlock dumbells. For someone without a dedicated room (with lots of space) for their workout equipment these are fantastic dumbells. They go up to 85 or 90lbs without the add-on kit and they are super fast and easy to change the weight. They are pricey but considering the amount of dumbells they replace well worth it for the right user.
After using the PowerBlock setup for a couple years I came across IronMaster another brand with adjustable dumbells. They go to 75lbs without the add-on kit and cost a little less than the PowerBlock dumbells. I have BOTH in my home gym now and I will go over the pros and cons of each for those of you trying to decide on a set up like this.
PowerBlocks:
Pros: Well made comfortable grip fast and easy to change the weight in 10lb increments nice stand included made in USA ability to go up to 85-90lbs as is and 120lbs with add-on. Excellent for exercises where you change weight quickly or frequently. Square dumbells don't roll.
Cons: Funky design with 4 pillars around your hand/wrist. It works but it makes me nervous at higher weights that if I were to drop them I could somehow catch my wrist in there and hurt myself. Difficult to quickly switch weights in increments smaller than 10lbs. This is a problem for many exercises. Although they are sturdy and have never given out on me they rattle and the plates move a little when you use them. Again they seem sturdy but when doing shoulder or bench press it's a little disconcerting. You need to make sure the magnetic pins are fully inserted and in the right spot or disaster could ensue. The dumbells get long when using a lot of weight which can be somewhat awkward for certain exercises.
Overall: These dumbells are best for exercises where you change the weight frequently or quickly and work best for non-press exercises in my experience. The add-on kit is a nice option but the dumbells are already pretty long at 85-90lbs so it may be impractical for a lot of exercises. They were the first of their kind they are still a serious contender in this ring.
IronMaster:
Pros: Well Made. More traditional looking & feeling dumbells. Up to 75lbs as is and 125lbs with kit. Not as long as PowerBlocks no awkward pillars to stick your hand in between. Nice stand included. Great bench and other accessories available (better than PowerBlock bench after using both). No rattling or moving of plates when in use. Sturdy and well balanced and made in USA. Excellent for press exercises. Just as quick to change the weight in 2.5lb or 5lb increments as it is by 10lbs or more.
Cons: Takes significantly longer to change the weight than PowerBlocks. For press exercises I find this to be less of an issue but for curls and other quick change exercises it's a bit of a pain. No locking mechanism for the screw in pins. This has never been an issue or caused a dumbell to fall apart during use but there's no locking mechanism (or magnet such as PowerBlocks) just friction preventing the pin from unscrewing. I'm not too worried about it but it has crossed my mind.
Overall: These dumbells are best for users who use higher weights for press exercises and want the traditional look and feel of a dumbell you might find in the gym. They don't rattle or move and are very solid. They also go higher in weight than the PowerBlocks with the add-on kit and cost less. Not as good for users using ligher weight and requiring quick changes.
Conclusion: For me having both pairs is a pretty good set up but If I were to choose just one I would stick with the IronMaster. I like them for their sturdiness and lack of rattling especially when using heavy weight. In addition to the IronMaster I would buy a cheaper set of adjustable dumbells with a lower maximum weight (50lbs maybe) that could be easily adjusted in 5lb (or smaller) increments to use for curls and kickbacks etc...and stick with the IronMaster for the heavier weights where I really don't mind the extra minute of rest to change the weight! In fact I think I will sell my PowerBlocks and get a set up like this and have some money left over for Muscle Milk! :)
P.S. the IronMaster adjustable bench is the BEST I have used!

The Most Bang for your Buck
These are great and the best price on the like to be found anywhere. They have a wider range of weight than most any for the price. They also come as a pair with a stand (you can leave the smaller stands on the floor unattached to the frame stand if you don't have room) all included unlike most of this sort. I've been using them for a couple of weeks and they're remaining quite sturdy.
The rubber covered grip with flat sides is actually innovative and underrated keeping them aligned for replacement on the stand for readjustment and it's quite comfortable.
The dumbell frames are solid hard plasic held together by bolts so it could be disassembled if replacement parts are ever needed (I don't know if they're available though) or tightening required. The adjustment switches (red) are a more flexible plastic but thick and durable. The weights themselves are black painted iron. The stand is metal and solid quick to assemble with the actual weight rests which could be used seperately if you don't have room for the stand are a solid plastic. The dumbells have idiot proof diagrams on them by the switches for reference when adjusting to the desired weight.
The "2.5 lb. adjustment" isn't quite accurate. They are really adjustable in 5 lb. increments; 2.5 lbs. on each side of the dumbell. So you could adjust them in 2.5 lb. increments but they'd be 2.5 lbs. off-balance.
If you want the convenience of adjustable dumbells with a wide range of weight and you're on a budget these are without a doubt the ones to get.

Seriously flawed bar/slider/lock design
Here is my experience after replacing 2 sets in 10 days.
It has a cheap plastic bar. Here are the design flaws of this dumbbell
0. These dumbbells don't/will not have LONG life since the plastic used in bar/base will crack soon.
1. I received the dumbbells with broken cap. If you open the top cap (with red slider) you will see the entire bar/handle design is flimsy made with cheap plastic.
2. The red plastic slider will jam often or doesn't slide smoothly. The sliding/locking mechanism is based on thin white plastic strip black plastic belt and black strip (below the red slider). They are flimsy and will not last longer much. You will need to replace bar often.
3. The base to keep the dumbbells and adjust weights is also plastic. You can't just drop dumbbells if you are used to hex dumbells etc. You will have to align weights using the base to adjust. Till now this aligning process has frustrated me.
4. Lifecore may not have Quality Assurance team since I have already exchanged 2 dumbbells because of this sliding/locking/bar problem.
I wish Lifecore had made this 5/10 lbs METAL bar that could last life time. Any adjustable dumbbells should be designed to last life time. Hex dumbbells are like that. Otherwise there is no point in spending so much money on this.

Excellent product. Cheaper and way better than SelectTech
I purchased the PowerBlock dumbbells after returning the SelectTech dumbbells. The SelectTechs are cumbersome the weight plates feel loose and you have to dial two dials to select one weight. Furthermore they are over $100 more expensive than the PowerBlocks.
On the plus side for the PowerBlocks:
1) They take up very little space for an adjustable dumbbell
2) They feel solid
3) While not cheap they are much cheaper than the SelectTech dumbbells
4) You can do over the head tricep extensions using both weights or one using the handles on the bottom
5) Selecting the weights is a one step process for each weight
6) They are upgradable with a heavier handle option and a barbell option
On the minus side:
1) Alligning the pins to select the weight is a bit more difficult with the weights on the ground. The stand or a table top would alleviate this problem.
Overall I'm pleased with the PowerBlocks and definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a quality adjustable weight dumbbell.

Great quality product
I've been using the 1090's for a few weeks now. I have a very limited amount of workout space in my apartment so I don't have the room for a full dumbbell set. This set provides 90 lbs for each arm which is more than enough for every exercise that I do. 50 lbs was not enough so I'm glad I bought the 1090's vs. the 1050's.
The 1050's have a nice rubberized handle grip but the 1090's have an all metal grip with a rough texture. I find them less comfortable than the rubberized grip but a little tape takes care of the issue.
The dial selector is very good and is super easy to use. It just takes a couple seconds to dial in the weight you want and off you go. This is a very high quality product and it works very well.
The only drawback I've seen is that the bar is pretty long so you are using a large and long dumbbell even when you only need 10 lbs of weight. I've had some trouble doing double arm curls because the weights hit when I get my arms close enough together to do the exercise properly. To compensate I just do one set with each arm individually. 90% of the exercises I do are not affected by the length so its not a significant issue for me.
I highly recommend this set. You should consider getting the stand to save your back. 90 or 180 lbs is a lot of weight to lift from the floor and especially if you are doing it repetitively. The stand is at the right height and orientation to allow easy pickup of the dumbbells without straining your back.
I bought the 1090 dumbbell set (two dumbbells) and the stand new for $600 at Play it Again Sports. I haven't seen any deals that good online. If you don't want to spend the money for a full set of dumbbells and/or you if you have limited space then I highly recommend this product. I have to say I still enjoy dialing in the weight every time I do it. I guess the gadget factor is something to consider also :-)
